In September 2010, faced with the risk of badminton disappearing in Lachine, a big-hearted resident of Lachine, Stéphane Fortaich, took over the organization of the sport for the citizens of the borough. Gradually, players who were passionate about ensuring the longevity of their sport contacted Stéphane, and the first members of the board of directors were formed: René Breyel, Vickel Coossa, Steve Gagné, Stéphane Fortaich, and Julie Bérubé.
In June 2011, Badminton Lachine officially became a non-profit organization (NPO).
The club enhanced its offerings with the support of Bon Départ, Black Knight, the Member of Parliament for Marquette, the Borough, and Collège Sainte-Anne.
In response to growing demand, the club also introduced training for competitive adults. Clinics and internal tournaments were organized to meet the needs of more experienced players.
The first youth classes were held with all participants in the same gymnasium. Gradually, levels were established: beginner, intermediate, and competitive. The involvement of dedicated coaches such as Mike Ngo, Thi-Van Luong, Martin Lafond, Denyse Julien, and Christophe Boulanger led to significant progress among the young players. A course structure, including an elite level, was implemented, and it became common to see these young players get involved as instructors or coaches.
These pioneers organized the very first Badminton Lachine Classic with the support of the Bon Départ Foundation and Black Knight. The tournament welcomed around fifty players of all levels, including a parent-child section. The event quickly became a unifying, recreational tradition full of sportsmanship. Local businesses in Lachine got involved by offering door prizes. Over the years, the tournament evolved to focus on players of provincial caliber.
In November 2013, under the leadership of Thi-Van Luong, the club organized, for the first time, a stage of the Yonex circuit of Badminton Quebec: the Lachine Invitation. The quality of the services offered, the gyms, and the proximity contributed to the success of this event, which is still organized 10 years later.
The club also played a key role in the Québec Games, organizing the selection tournaments for the Lac-Saint-Louis region for several years.
Badminton Lachine is a non-profit organization with the goal of being a key player in badminton in Montreal. Its mission revolves around three main areas:
Promote badminton to the residents of Lachine and the surrounding areas by offering programs and activities accessible to all.
Provide easy access to the sport for all age groups and under good conditions.
Contribute to the educational and sports development of children in Lachine and the surrounding areas through sports.
The values bring together the ideals pursued by the Club. They unite members, administrators, professionals, and volunteers, shaping our ways of thinking and acting.
The Club is committed to encouraging those involved, directly or indirectly, in the organization to treat everyone they encounter with respect and consideration, to respect the equipment, and to accept the decisions of Badminton Lachine.
